Innovative and clever design, solid build, great customer service

Posted by Hiroshi on May 3rd 2023

After happily using the BrassKnuckles on top, when it was time to add a hitch rack, it was a no-brainer to choose the BackStage for its innovative and clever built-in swing-out design and the solid build that RockyMounts is known for. When compared to other "rack plus a separate swing-out unit" setups of other brands', the BackStage built-in swing-out design is absolutely brilliant because it's the most compact when stowed up (least bulk/distance from bumper), lighter & less expensive as a whole system. The swing-out works beautifully, and the entire assembly is super beefy in the usual RockyMounts way. All the knobs/switches are cleverly designed for ease of use and security. Assembly/installation was very easy/intuitive out of the box. One nitpick wishlist... Maybe this is because I'm used to using BrassKnuckles, but I think it'd've been even better if the hook-and-trigger unit had a built-in lock (especially when quickly transporting just 1 bike and don't feel like dealing with the included cable lock). If such becomes available as an extra BackStage part for purchase in the future, I'll buy it in a heartbeat. Online ordering was simple (w/ a specified lock#), and processing/shipping (free) was super-fast. To top off the great products, the customer-support folks at RockyMounts are absolutely above-and-beyond helpful. Another customer-for-life here once again - thanks, guys!

Exceptional Bike Rack and Stellar Customer Service

Posted by Marc on Apr 13th 2023

I recently found myself in need of a bike rack that would allow me full access to my car, and my search led me to Rockymounts. I decided to give it a shot, and I am beyond thrilled with my decision! The shipment arrived incredibly fast, and the bike rack is worth every penny. The assembly process was a breeze, with clear instructions and minimal tools required - just a Philips screwdriver. At one point, I thought I might have encountered an issue with some missing screws, but the Rockymounts team was quick to respond to my message and ensured that my weekend plans weren't jeopardized. After following their guidance, I ended up with a flawlessly assembled bike rack. The quality and durability of this bike rack are outstanding, and I have no doubt that it will last for many years to come. Not only does the Rockymounts bike rack meet all of my expectations, but their exceptional customer service has also left a lasting impression. I wholeheartedly recommend Rockymounts to anyone in search of a reliable, high-quality bike rack.

    Really perfect!

Posted by David on May 20th 2022

I'm a real customer and I can tell you this is one of the best product I ever head. There are not many swing away bike racks are on the market and I did my research before buying this and I never regret it. I had it for about 3 years now. No issues so far. I drive a truck and I wanted something that can be installed non stop so I can throw on my bike go for a ride any time. But I have to be able to access the bed for loading / unloading that the swing are allows me to do so. It is a well constructed, easy to use, but definitely adds a little weight to a small car. I definitely recommend this product!

Outstanding Solid Safe Rack! Even protected our Sprinter van in an accident.

Posted by Anne Ackerman on Feb 13th 2021

This rack is amazing. We use it to carry 2 e-bikes on a Sprinter 2500 camper van. It allows total access to the back of the van. The swing-away mechanism is smooth and easy to use and the anti-wobble technology holds the rack really securely. The bikes are solidly secured by the tires and there is no contact with the frame. I also love the integrated hitch pin lock and cable lock for the bikes. On a recent trip we were rear-ended in a traffic jam and this rack took the brunt of the force of the collision. Though it bent, it absorbed the impact and protected our van from any damage. Despite the damage to the rack, it was still able to carry our bikes another 1000 miles home. We are so grateful for this rack and replaced it immediately.

    Rack: Great, Build Instructions: So-so

Posted by Skeeball on Sep 12th 2020

Bought this rack Sep 2020. I looked at all the competitors but due to COVID, only a few racks are actually in stores. I wasn't too sure if the swing arm was an important feature or not. Since no competitors have this feature I thought it was too necessary....WRONG. Great feature. I have a new model Nissan Murano with 2" receiver. I think the rack is great and I am glad I was able to find one locally. Where I see need for improvement is with the directions. There are like 8 pictures that show assembly. I was patient and used trial and error. For example, the wheel trays, there are two and there is nothing about which one is supposed to be outboard. Just say, the "RockyMounts" decal should be outboard and should be oriented up when the hitch is folded. The hitch is heavy but I have 50 lbs ebikes so I will appreciate the heft. Due to the weight I will not be removing and re-installing as I had envisioned.

    Built like a brick s***house

Posted by Matt on Aug 30th 2019

So glad I chose this rack over Thule/Yakima "equivalents". I drive a late model Nissan Frontier crewcab and wanted full access to the bed for loading/unloading camping gear. The fold-down function of this rack *almost* allows the tailgate to fully open, but not quite. It rests on the inside plastic wheel rest of the bike rack. I suspected this might happen, which is why I wanted swing-out functionality as well. Thule and Yakima sell a separate swing-out attachment which connects to their hitch-mount bike racks. The attachment plus rack cost almost $400 more than this Rocky Mounts rack, and it also causes the rack to stick out out much further from the rear of the vehicle. The Rocky Mounts backstage swing-away has a clever design, is user-friendly, doesn't stick out too far from the rear of the vehicle, and doesn't have the bikes sitting too high up. It's also built like a brick s***house: super-solid, bikes don't move at all while driving, even on bumpy roads. I am very, very happy with this rack and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a platform-style bike rack. The only "con" is that it may be a bit heavy for people of smaller/weaker stature. It weighs a solid 50 pounds, so installing/removing it from a vehicle may be challenging for those with limited strength. If you plan to frequently install/remove the rack from your vehicle, I highly recommend buying a dedicated ratchet with deep-well socket. This allows installation/removal in less than a minute.
