Product Design Engineer

About the Role:
We are currently seeking to expand our R&D team with the addition of a product design engineer. As a thriving small business in the outdoor industry Rockymounts offers a unique and rewarding opportunity in this role with design influence and engagement in all aspects of the product development process from conception to production. You will be pushed out of your comfort zones at times as you face some of the challenges that come with working on a small team and playing multiple roles. Candidates best suited for this position should have a background in consumer product design and the outdoor/cycling industry.
Duties and Responsibilities:
•Develop multiple projects from concept to production
•Ensure that the project is on time, manufacturable and meets predetermined scope requirements for cost, aesthetics, usability, functionality, and durability
•Collaborate directly with the lead product engineer, owner, consultants and RockyMounts team to come up with new product ideas and solutions
•Daily use of solidworks creating parts, assemblies, technical drawings and FEAs
•Design of components based off of plastic injection molding, aluminum extruding, die casting and sheet metal forming manufacturing processes
•Create itemized BOMs with design specifications for complex assemblies
•Construct and test proof of concept prototypes using 3D printing and other rapid prototyping methods. Testing included fatigue, usability, cycle, drop and road tests.
•Day to day communication with asian suppliers to keep projects on track and to solve manufacturing challenges
•Travel to Asian suppliers 2-3 times a year to work on and oversee new and existing projects and to discuss production challenges and solutions
•In charge of in coming quality control inspections and continuous product improvement
•Develop packaging design, user manuals, warning labels and photo realistic renderings with the marketing team
•Assist customer service team by answering and troubleshooting technical questions.
•Maintain a thorough working knowledge of our products as well as competitive products and market
•Manage and organize engineering documents and drawings.
•1 to 3 years of experience, outstanding recent grads may be considered
•BSME or BSMET from an accredited college with a minimum 3.0 GPA
•Solidworks proficiency to create parts, assemblies and drawings
•Understanding of production processes (Injection molding, extrusions, CNC machining and metalworking) and material properties of plastics and metals
•Attention to detail to create accurate and defined models, drawings and production BOMs
•Can work independently with minimal supervision as well as to work collaboratively to build off of each other's ideas and accept constructive criticism and compromises
•Able to think out of the box and approach problems from a creative perspective
•Hands-on thinker able to take an idea and build a simple proof of concept prototype
•Passion for and understanding of the bicycle industry and current design trends
•Consumer product design background with an eye for user interaction and aesthetics a plus
•Ability to travel internationally 2-3 times a year for a period of 10 days
•Ability to pass a background and drug test
