Great rack at a great price. Love all the features: interchangeable axle inserts, multiple mounting options, sleek low profile look. They thought of it all. Even has a built in cable lock. However, the cable lock is the source of my only complaint. It rattles around so badly it can be heard inside of my car. The cable has a clear rubber coating on it but doesn’t seem to do much. Other than that A+ product, plan to purchase a 2nd.
If you’re not trying to mount this with t-track or bolting it on an overland style rack… ignore this and leave knowing this thing rocks and is basically perfect. But. For those of you who have stayed. I put this rack on an overland style truck rack (KB VOODOO Fabs rack). All these new overland racks are flat and about 3” wide beams with slotted bolt holes to attach racks, tents, and so on. For some reasons…. The bolt holes on the nose of the switch hitter are not centered. Even with switching out the bottom mounting plate (the flat one that has slotted bolt holes… yet the noses bolt holes are not slotted) the bolt holes are again not centered so it rests on the sloping front part of the nose. When you try to tighten it. It bends back where the nose is connected to the main rack body. I drilled two holes. In the center. And now it can sit on any flat surface that is up to 4.5” wide. I’m sure there is a nerdy engineering reason why they decided to put the holes where they are… but centering them… seems like a great idea. So until then. This will fit on an overland style rack. You just need to drill two new centered holes. And then it will be custom and you can add that to your overlanding forum tag. I know I will.
Just received (2) LS’s via the UPS man today. Everything from turn time, packaging, instructions, and product exceeded expectations. Construction and finish is solid, install instructions have pics and print, sleek design w/ integrated security. Stoked for tomorrow’s shake down ride to the trail head. Cheers Rocky Mounts!
I had 2 of these on my roof for the past year and they’ve been amazing. I have a mix of QR and thru axle bikes and these racks have been perfect. Easy to use and easy to swap between Thru axle and QR bikes.
I installed this bike rack on a 2013 Subaru Impreza hatchback and it fits! I had to scoot my Thule AeroBlade Edge crossbars all the way forward so that the end of the rack wouldn't hit the glass of my trunk, when open. Really high quality materials and bike feels really solid. Went with RockyMounts because it is cheaper than the Thule offerings, plus the spare parts are way cheaper too. Bought the rack at REI for 120$.
The fact that the rack fits lots of different front axle configurations is great if you have bikes with different set ups (e.g., road bike with old quick release, 100 and 110 mtb bikes) and it is easy to install and solidly built. However, on through axle bikes there isn't much rack for the front forks to "grab onto", so until you get the through axle in, if you bump the car, or if you have a high roof and have trouble positioning the forks on the rack, or if you are parked very unlevel the forks fairly easily slip out of the rack and onto your roof. My car is old with lots of scratched and dings, but if I had something nicer I wouldn't want this happening every now and then. Also, why not just integrate the rear strap so it is permanently attached to one side, have the rear strap completely detachable makes it easy to lose (or get stolen if you keep it on the rack all the time).
I got this rack because I have road bikes with regular skewers and some newer mountain bikes with thru axle front mounts. The adapters for the thru axle conversion are not that much cheaper, for what you get. Plus this rack has an integrated lock...bonus. Just mounted on my CRV with old Thule square bars and worked like a charm. Well, except for the length. It sticks out and prevents the hatch back from opening fully. I may have to cut the length of the tray. Otherwise, quality is great, I recommend this rack.
the switchhitter installs easy, I put it on our Subaru Outback. It works great for the trough axel and regular skews. My only complaints are when mounted on the Subaru they are a little long impeding the trunk when open, I solved thin by cutting the tray down a little shorter. I also wish the had a leveling feature, when installed on the Subaru they lean out due to the curve in the factory roof racks, I solved this with some plastic shims. Once these two items were solved the racks work perfectly.
Let me just start out by saying I have never felt compelled to leave a review for a product (positive or negative) in my life, by this product has changed that. In my 20 years of trying countless roof racks, hitch racks, and trunk racks I have always been extremely confused and frustrated by how expensive, complicated, and ultimately insecure the main stream racks are. Even after installing them I never felt the bike was secure so I would use additional bungie cords to keep the bike in place. So I decided to search for some additional rack brands and companies and came across Rocky Mounts. I am from PA so I have never heard of them before but decided to give them a chance because the price was right and the description sounded like exactly what I was looking for. I received the rack as a present this Christmas and just got around to installing it this morning. Wow! It was the easiest installation ever, the wrap around strap for the front bracket is ingenious! Total instal time was 5minutes and better yet it is rock solid! There is absolutely no movement or play (I have a 2014 Subaru CrossTrek with factory bars). I am an avid mountain and road biker so the the ability to switch between through axel for my mountain and quick release for my road bike on the fly is unbeatable. The quick release adapter slides right through the through axel bracket so there are no tools necessary to change. So innovative, inexpensive, simple, and secure! Very pleased!

The bar bounces around and is a little noisy.
This rack fits everything from QR to DH bikes and it very easy to swap between inserts. Its very solid and quiet, I'm very happy with them. I have them mounted to yakima wispbars.
Easy to use and very versatile from road bikes to mountain bikes w/ plus tires. Great purchase.
I have the jet, dual racks. I want to go to switchhitter on one side for my 12mm through axle cross bike. Can I use same lock core from my jet?
At first I was second-guessing this purchase when the LBS guy told me this was the one to get. Why would I need all the options for the front fork mount when all road bikes use QR? Turns out I ended up buying a new road bike with disc brakes that used a 12mm thru-axle, and the genius of this rack was thus revealed. I also appreciated all the color choices (went with white to match the car), and the built-in lock. The whole thing has a very clean design (especially without the QR lever hanging out) and I have no problem keeping it mounted. The only thing that annoyed me was the "rockymounts" sticker, which didn't want to lay flat or come off. With some Goo-Gone and elbow grease it ceased to be a problem.
Great customer service (Rod from RM talked with me for about 15 minutes to help me figure out if this rack was best for my needs) and extremely impressive build quality. I'm going to keep trying to sell my friends on RM's products. Pretty darn good stuff.
Love how sleek and easy to use the SwitchHitter is. Very affordable and allows me to have confidence in securely transporting my bikes! Thanks RockyMounts!
I have the issue of running a QR road bike and 15x110 mountain bike. This product meets my needs perfectly, I can switch between the two axle sizes with minimal labor. It also fits perfectly on my Subaru factory cross bars! Just wish it had more colors.
I bought two white Switch hitter bike racks from their Boulder store. Very friendly staff, and quick installation. These racks are very aerodynamic on my Thule roof rack, I don't notice any whistle sound or MPG drop when driving. Bike mounting is simple. My car has pretty stiff suspension, a good fork mount like this helps keeping the center of gravity low, and it helps keeping my bike stable.
Picked up two of these for my Thule Aeroblade bars and they work great. the plates on the bottom of the rack slide into the slot on the bars and they look great. I can carry my santa cruz with a thru axle or my madone with a quick release.
