The BackStage is the only swing away platform hitch rack on the market that swings out 180 degrees. No matter if you have a truck, SUV or camper van, this rack is perfect for those who need open access to the back end of their vehicle. Based around the MonoRail platform, the BackStage provides full access to the back of the vehicle, even with bikes loaded.

Product Features:
  • The industry’s first 180 degree swing away platform hitch rack
  • Carries 2 bikes, up to 60 lbs per tray (120 lbs total). Not compatible with Add-On
  • No contact with frame, secures bicycle by front wheel
  • Carries road tires up to 5.0” fat bike tires, and diameters from 20” to 29”
  • Compatible with bicycle wheelbases from 36” to 50”
  • Folds flat against the vehicle and tilts down 30 degrees to allow for hatch access
  • Only available for 2" hitches. Utilizes RockyMounts premium 3-axis anti wobble system
  • Includes locking hitch bolt and cable lock, keyed alike
  • Not for use with fender equipped bicycles
  • Rack weight 59 lbs (shipping weight 75 lbs)
  • For cargo vans like Sprinter, Transit and ProMaster, an 8" Hitch Extension is usually required for handlebars to clear the door.  Road/Gravel is usually OK, modern mountain bike bars are too wide and can contact the rear door and the hitch extension is required.

    Backstage rack

Posted by Douglas Greenspan on Sep 23rd 2024

Although this rack has a few things that could be improved upon it is still the best rack for the price. I replaced a 2013 Kuat NV hitch due to it having a 1.25" hitch setup. The adapter was too unstable, so replacement was the better option. The full swing away of the Backstage and the quality of the build makes this rack a must have and makes it superior to the Kuat. I would like to see a better option for the bike lock, and it would be nice to have the bike repair clamp that the Kuat had, but the swing away capability far outweighs both of those capabilities of the Kuat. The price is comparable, and the bike is much more stable on the back of the vehicle that the Kuat.

Awesome rack. Live in Massachusetts and have traveled with 2 pedal assist e-bikes to Florida and west coast and have had zero issues. Highly recommend

Great bike rack! Class B rv and it allows the Transit doors to open and lock at 90*. 3,000 mile trip and never an issue.

    Back stage

I have a sprinter with boxes on back of van. This rack worked great with a 18" extension. Bikes swing out and clear boxes nicely. Most importantly is the rack is rock solid in the hitch. There is no rocking like my old Thule. I added a set of Brake/ signal lights and pluded into the trailer plug. Added safety and makes it Legal.

    Solid

Just got this recently and took it from Tx to Utah and back. We camped out mostly in backwoods and drove through a lot of dirt roads that were bumpy and some a bit rough. The rack didn't come loose at all the bike stayed in place and didn't shift. The swing away feature is perfect for our sprinter van, too so we can access the back doors without having to remove the bike or rack. This rack is solid and a great one! (We used the hitch extender because my ebike handlebars are just a tad too wide and it didn't affect the performance one bit.)

the Backstage was relatively easy to install and use however the so called anti bouncing claim is a bit overstated. bolts are all tight and it still bounces

Really happy with the BackStage rack. I was able to assemble it step by step with help from a video on the site and the instructions included. A great value with all the options to make accessing the back of vehicle easier. Super solid, well made and easy to load bikes onto. Great product that I look forward to using for years to come.

Innovative and clever design, solid build, great customer service

Posted by Hiroshi on May 3rd 2023

After happily using the BrassKnuckles on top, when it was time to add a hitch rack, it was a no-brainer to choose the BackStage for its innovative and clever built-in swing-out design and the solid build that RockyMounts is known for. When compared to other "rack plus a separate swing-out unit" setups of other brands', the BackStage built-in swing-out design is absolutely brilliant because it's the most compact when stowed up (least bulk/distance from bumper), lighter & less expensive as a whole system. The swing-out works beautifully, and the entire assembly is super beefy in the usual RockyMounts way. All the knobs/switches are cleverly designed for ease of use and security. Assembly/installation was very easy/intuitive out of the box. One nitpick wishlist... Maybe this is because I'm used to using BrassKnuckles, but I think it'd've been even better if the hook-and-trigger unit had a built-in lock (especially when quickly transporting just 1 bike and don't feel like dealing with the included cable lock). If such becomes available as an extra BackStage part for purchase in the future, I'll buy it in a heartbeat. Online ordering was simple (w/ a specified lock#), and processing/shipping (free) was super-fast. To top off the great products, the customer-support folks at RockyMounts are absolutely above-and-beyond helpful. Another customer-for-life here once again - thanks, guys!
