The BackStage is the only swing away platform hitch rack on the market that swings out 180 degrees. No matter if you have a truck, SUV or camper van, this rack is perfect for those who need open access to the back end of their vehicle. Based around the MonoRail platform, the BackStage provides full access to the back of the vehicle, even with bikes loaded.

Product Features:
  • The industry’s first 180 degree swing away platform hitch rack
  • Carries 2 bikes, up to 60 lbs per tray (120 lbs total). Not compatible with Add-On
  • No contact with frame, secures bicycle by front wheel
  • Carries road tires up to 5.0” fat bike tires, and diameters from 20” to 29”
  • Compatible with bicycle wheelbases from 36” to 50”
  • Folds flat against the vehicle and tilts down 30 degrees to allow for hatch access
  • Only available for 2" hitches. Utilizes RockyMounts premium 3-axis anti wobble system
  • Includes locking hitch bolt and cable lock, keyed alike
  • Not for use with fender equipped bicycles
  • Rack weight 59 lbs (shipping weight 75 lbs)
  • For cargo vans like Sprinter, Transit and ProMaster, an 8" Hitch Extension is usually required for handlebars to clear the door.  Road/Gravel is usually OK, modern mountain bike bars are too wide and can contact the rear door and the hitch extension is required.

    Liking This Rack

Posted by Lee Mayer on Oct 17th 2017

I've used the rack about 4 times on DC's pothole ridden streets. The rack holds the bikes securely and it's quick and easy to load and unload. Living in the city I don't leave the rack on when it's not in use. You should know that it is very heavy but that's tone expected given its multiple "arms". The installation instructions and diagrams are horrible so give yourself at least 2 hours to figure out how to put the many parts together. I wish there was a way to secure the bikes to the rack with a U lock. With thousands of dollars worth of bikes on the rack, a cable lock is not sufficient.

    Worked Perfectly & Easy Setup

Posted by Spencer on Oct 17th 2017

Bought this rack a few weeks ago. Received it one day after ordering (based in CO). Install and setup were very easy. Just drove 11 hours with the rack/bikes and it performed great. Love the functionality of the swing arm providing full access to the tailgate, etc. Great overall product and very pleased.

What can I say title says it all! Easy to use. Hold bikes secure, even off-road. Swing away function is the smartest rack invention ever!!

    1st day impressions

Posted by Eric R. Eltinge on Sep 19th 2017

I have a Winnebago ERA MBZ Sprinter 3500 dually. Carrying a Specialized electric bike. Rack is excellent quality, heavier than my 2-bike Thule electric bike rack. Initial impressions: (1) You don't have to install the 2nd tray if you are only carrying 1 bike, like me; (2) instruction schematics are so fine they are almost unreadable; (3) there is no construction video on retailer or YouTube; (4) BHCS bolts are easily confused; (5) locking cable is useless, use On Guard chain or U-bolt; (6) instructions say "No not use bike covers, bike bras, or bikes with rear disc wheel." That eliminates just about everybody with a high quality bike. Why??? Overall, excellent engineering. Will see how it handles the open road.

    The rack for sprinter vans

Posted by Kate on Sep 7th 2017

Just finished a 4 state road trip and have to say, I love this rack. The ability to open the back of our sprinter van without having to remove the bikes is absolutely wonderful. Swinging the rack out of the way is simple, so simple that once unlocked the rack moves easily using only one hand. We probably "sold" several of these on our trip. Bikes were secure, minimal movement.

    Swing Away Hitch

Posted by Rob W. on Aug 27th 2017

Great rack. It's sooo nice to be able to get into the back of my vehicle. I've been waiting for something like this to hit the market. Of course, being an entitled white person, I do notice things I might change. 1. I think some sort of buckle arrangement would work better that the current bolt to secure the swing arm. It would be more convenient. 2. Add an eyelet to the swing arm so that people can use an alternate lock or cable. After my last bike was stolen (cut cable), I got a heavy chain. I now have to lock it the hitch eyelet it gets in the way of the swing arm.

    Great Leap Forward

Posted by Phillip R. on Aug 25th 2017

The swing out works smoothly even when fully loaded. Easy access on and off. I would like to see the bolt handle for locking the carrier in place improved and something other than plastic for the lock exterior.

90 Day Review of Back Stage

Posted by Edward L. on Aug 24th 2017

I waited for several months ton have my BackStage shipped, there were delays but Rocky Mounts kept me well informed and provided the option to cancel my order. Assembly and installation was easy, use of swing arm or tilt feature provides options for access on my Subaru wagon. I am very happy with the functionality of the design and stout construction. For the money I would have liked an integrated swing arm lock option for convenience, I would not want to replace the cable system but would enjoy a faster option to discourage casual theft. Overall, would bang again and have recommended the Back Stage to others, particularly those with tailgates.
